Looking into the rooms, where Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) used to live, fancy took me, that the lady of the house had just gone to the room next door and she would return in a moment to greet us. They gave an impression of being inhabited and used… Time flies by quickly and it seems like yesterday, when my teacher at the university started his lesson by suggesting to hold a minute of silence to respect Indira Gandhi, who had been assassinated. Though it happened in a far away country, India, she was a personality well known in the whole world. And if personality passes away, it touches all people familiar with his or her name. We paid tribute to her by a minute of silence…
For Indians her personality means a great deal. Today, they come to visit this her residence, which became a museum. Indira Gandhi moved to this house soon after her father Jawaharlal Nehru´s death in 1964. She continued to live here as Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1965 and she lived here as Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again as Prime Minister from 1980 until the day of her assassination. It was carried out on 31st October 1984 in the garden of this very residence. She was Prime Minister of India for 15 years.
This crystal pathway is actually a sculpture named Glass river and it was gifted to India as a remembrance of Indira Gandhi by Czechoslovakia in 1989. The Glass river is created of 5,600 kg of lead crystal on stainless steel structure. It is 33 m long and 2 m wide. The spot, where Indira was shot, is marked by an Indian onyx square.
