There is not much time, but it is impossible not to go, at least for a moment, to the national monument of India, that in fact is a war memorial arch, called India Gate. India Gate was constructed from 1921 until 1931. It is a majestic arch of granit and sandstone, built to commemorate 74,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in World War I and additionally those, who died following it, in wars and battles until 1921, totally in honour of 90,000 soldiers. Their names are inscribed on its walls.
India Gate is 42 metres tall and beneath it the eternal flame, Amar Jawan Jyoti, is burning in tribute to all martyred Indian soldiers. It was designed by sir Edwin Luytens (1869-1944), English architect, who designed also the famous Cenotaph in London. At any time the area around the India Gate is full with people hanging around and having a good time. I have talked to a group of Indian lady teachers, I found it very interesting, as my sister in law is a teacher, too.
