Hniezdne is the name of a village situated on the banks of the river Poprad, not more than 5 km away from Stará Ľubovňa with its Stará Ľubovňa castle. The first written mention about Hniezdne dates back to 1286. Originally it was an agricultural community but it became a free royal town in 1412, populated by tradesmen and craftsmen. Passing through the special spindle-shaped main square we can see many interesting original burgher houses of 17th and 18th century.
Nowadays Hniezdne has appr. 1400 inhabitants. And recently it became famous because the very first whisky distillery in Slovakia was founded here. The name of the local distillery and whisky is derived from the name of the village. Hniezdne = Nest Village = Nestville. And to make it even better, there is Nestville chocolate here, too. 🙂
