HANAZONO JINJA

This is already the third place where this shrine stands. It is said that this shrine has been originally located at Mt. Yoshino in the province of Yamato in west-central Japan .  The shrine has been located here since 1648, before this it was located at place not far from here, but  In the Tokugawa period Lord Asakura, Chikugo no Kami, received the land where the shrine stood from the shogunate for one of his residencies in Edo. Because of this the shrine had to be relocated again and thus it was moved to this location. The guardian deity of Shinjuku is enshrined in this jinja, enshrined deities are: Uga no Mitama no Kami, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, Ukemochi no Kami. The shrine has been functioning as the general protector of the Shinjuku area for many centuries.

Toorii at the main entrance. It is Sunday, the day when the Aozora-Kotto-Ichi = open air antique flea market is being held. What a pity that I come so late and many of the stalls are already packed up

Karajishi – Chinese lions images – were cast in 1821 and are next to one of the side entrances to the shrine
