This private Buddhist prayer temple was founded in 1235 by Fujiwara Yoritsune, the fourth shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. It is the only temple in Kamakura which worships Godai Myoo = Five Wisdom Kings. These are: Gozanze-myoo, Gundari-myoo, Daiitoku-myoo, Kongoyasha-myoo and Fudo-myoo.
The Goma Fire Ritual is performed here on the 28th of every months. Everybody is allowed to enter the Main Hall during this time.
