During the Edo Period (1603-1868) the residence of Matsudaira Setsunokami, who was a feudal lord, was located here. The garden was picturesque, with waterfalls, and it was known as “Edo´s Hakone” during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). From the Taisho Period (1912-1926) to the middle of the Showa Period (1926-1989) it was famous as an active pleasure district with special atmosphere. Now small eateries and bars are here picturesquely set on hilly terrain.
