GALTA JI – HANNUMAN TEMPLE IN JAIPUR

Hanuman ranks among the most popular deities in Hinduism. No wonder then that we come across his images in all of India. He is very famous as a monkey hero, devoted to Rama and this his devotion is his greatest power. Hanuman has something in common both with monkeys and people. He tended to jump from a tree to a tree – this brings him close to monkeys. But his speech, clothes, customs and dwelling definitely draw him much closer to human beings than to monkeys. Hanuman was able to jump high into heaven and this makes him a miraculous creature.

The entrance area to the temple which is situated in a deep narrow valley of the Aravalli hills next to Jaipur did not give away the fact, that the valley would be quite long and so interesting. Due to the fact that there is a natural spring on the hill  and water from it flowing down is captured in reservoirs,  and due to the fact, that monkeys live in the valley, the sightseeing of the temple area becomes very exciting. Hindu ascetics lived here as early as in the early 15th century and temples here were mostly constructed in the 16th century.

There are seven water reservoirs – pools, some of them are used by pilgrims for ritual baths.

This is the Main Temple –  Galta Ji Temple itself. It was built in the 16th century by Diwan Rao Kriparam, who was a courtier of Sawai Jai Singh II.

This seems to be a very sturdy material

Yes, this valley is full with monkeys. They are rhesus macaques and they are either just playing around or “guarding” the temples or the reservoirs.
