SANTORINI

This is the place where the doom of the Minoan civilization on Crete started in the past – between 1450 and 1400 B.C.  A huge volcano erupted here and caused a massive tsunami which devastated the Minoan Crete.  We can see parts of the volcano above the sea level while under the sea the rest of it is hidden and still active. Santorini is exactly what is above the sea level from this huge crater. It is in fact a volcanic caldera.

Many people believe that Santorini was in fact the legendary Antlantis which collapsed under the sea. The Dorians, who settled here in the 8th centrury B.C. called the island Thíra. Following the Venetian conquest in the 13th century A.D. its name was changed into Santorini according to its patron saint Saint Irene.

Oia – the most beautiful and romantic village of Santorini island. It is a must while visiting the island. Not going there would mean not to see the most beautiful place the island has to offer. Oia has appr. 1,500 inhabitants and was damaged in 1956 earthquake
To stroll in the lanes, marvelling at hidden places and the views and whisper: “Eea”, “Eea”…  …because this is how  Oia is pronounced
… volcano caldera…

View from Oia to the capital of Santorini – little town of Fira. In this photo the shape of the edge of the volcano crater can clearly be recognized – while to the right from it is the sea water filling the crater up

Mules and donkeys on steps leading from Firá town a small port Skála Firón = the Old Port,  located 270 meters or 580 steps down

Ultimate relaxation…
… and a romantic sunset  🙂
